We received many positive responses to our first digital TEGO® RC newsletter and so would like to take the opportunity to thank you. Since the publication of the first edition in January, we have lots more news to share with you.

In this issue you will learn about our new technical equipment, a lab coater to support our innovation team. We will also introduce the new TEGO® RC 800 product for controlled release performance and we’ll give you an update about some regulatory changes in Europe. We are also delighted to introduce our new colleague, Dr. Christian Eger the new Head of Innovation Management for TEGO® RC EMEA.

Last but not least, we will provide an update on the events, tradeshows and conferences we have attended, and those coming up that we will be attending which hopefully will provide us with further opportunities to meet with you.

Your Global RC Team

New lab coater installed in Essen’s Technical Center

Using pilot facilities has always been a powerful tool we have relied on to demonstrate the versatility of our TEGO® RC Silicones in industrial processes. A large part of our success to date has been based on using mobile and stationary demonstration units which have helped us to show our customers how good release characteristics and reliable products can be achieved. These demonstration units have helped us to demonstrate the release performance of TEGO® RC products in our customers´ applications but also to continue in our innovation efforts for new solutions.

In April we installed a new lab coater to support operations in our Technical Center in Essen, Germany.

Here are some of the technical details about the new lab coater:

  • Equipped with a 5-roll coater
  • Line speed can be varied to a maximum of up to 50 m/min
  • Maximum web width of 150 mm
  • The line is equipped with an IST inerted UV lamp 120 W/cm being adjustable in height
  • Inline Corona treatment is done with 1000 W over a web width of 150mm
  • Substrate is on a 3” core and the maximum roll diameter is 400 mm with a maximum weight of 25kg

Please contact us if you would like to find out more about this new lab roller.

Label Summit Latin America

Evonik TEGO® RC team at Industry Events

As we entered Spring in Europe and the Americas, the tradeshow and conference calendar also warmed up, and the RC team has again been active on several events.

Jürgen Pomorin

First, in mid-February came the annual AWA Global Release Liner Conference & Exhibition in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Here we participated at the event with a table-top exhibition and our Vice President of Surface Technologies, Stefan Stadtmüller was invited to take part in an interesting panel discussion which looked at a range of important topics that are impacting the silicone and coating industry. These included new innovations in the industries and current issues around the tight supply situation that is key issue for our customers and their future business.

April saw us visit the VSKE (German association of self-adhesive labels and narrow web converters) conference in Marburg, Germany, where Jürgen Pomorin, Technical Manager Radiation Curing Europe (pictured left) presented the latest results of our linerless label solutions. The conference received its record number of visitors this year, and Jürgen’s presentation, titled “No Liner – no waste” - UV curing Silicones for Linerless Labels was well received alongside topics like digitalization and global packaging trends – both of which fit very well to our key topics at Evonik about waste and cost reduction.

The FINAT Technical Seminar took place in March in Barcelona, Spain, and the PSTC Tape Summit 2018, in Minneapolis, MN, USA in May, saw us presenting a table top exhibit at both and engaging with customers. Also in May we went to the RadTech 2018 UV Technology Expo, Rosemont, IL, USA with a shared booth with the Evonik Coating Additive group.

Our RC Team also enjoyed a very successful trip to Guadalajara, Mexico in April participating in the Label Summit Latin America. The label market in Central America and Mexico are certainly booming at the moment, and leading this PSA market is the increasing demand for labels for food and beverage products. Our team presented both the FDA and FCN (Food Contact Notification) approvals for our core line of TEGO® RC products. We have found that our customers are achieving great success using our TEGO® RC release coatings to produce fruit, food & beverage labels with, and without any liner.

Recent changes in the Global RC Team:
Welcoming Mr. Christian Eger to the RC Team as Head of Innovation Management EMEA
  Christian Eger

Q: Christian, you recently joined the RC Team in May as Head of Innovation Management EMEA; could you tell us a little about yourself and what you are responsible for?

C: I studied chemistry in Hamburg, Germany and received a PhD in the field of technical and macromolecular chemistry. In 1998 I started my career at Hanse Chemie AG in Geesthacht. Focus of my work was sales & marketing, R&D and product management. The chemistry I got familiar with was silicone chemistry for adhesive and sealant applications as well as the use of silica nanoparticles in different resin applications like hardcoats and 3D printing. After the acquisition by Evonik I became Managing Director Finance / Administration of Evonik Hanse GmbH in 2012.

Back in May of this year I started as Head of Innovation Management EMEA in Essen as successor to Winfried Hamann, who retired in April last year. I am currently responsible for two teams: The R&D team as well as the technical service team. This also includes our new pilot plant for customer trials.

Q: What about  your new role are you looking forward to?

C: What I am really looking forward to is to be working back in chemistry, because my job for the last six years was more of an administrative one. My past experience with silicone chemistry will help me a lot in my new role. Besides this, I will also enjoy seeing customers again too.

Q: In which areas do you see the most opportunity for innovations on silicone release coatings?

C: My team has been doing a lot of work on linerless systems, and much of our focus is on continuing to enhance our capabilities and pass these improvements on to our customers.

Q: What do you feel are the biggest challenge the Silicone industry faces over the coming years?

C: Shortage of silicone raw materials is surely something which will continue to stay an important topic.

Q: And finally, what do you like to do in your free time outside of work?

C: I’m married and have four children (14 to 21 years old). I like sports, nature, and fishing, and also enjoy good food. I recently joined a soccer team in Essen.
